What a war looks like on a lock screen
AO.news records every push notification sent by hundreds of news apps, as it is delivered. In June 2025, 81 of those apps pushed the Israel–Iran war 3,629 times in thirteen days. This is that war retold entirely in lock screens — minute by minute, translated from 38 languages.
There was no war on June 12, but the lock screen already knew something. At 08:28 UTC the IAEA declared Iran in breach of its non-proliferation duties for the first time in twenty years, and all day the apps pushed variations of the same sentence: an Israeli strike could happen within days.

The day’s biggest story was somewhere else entirely. Air India flight 171 crashed on takeoff in Ahmedabad, killing 260 people — and Reuters’ first push, like many first pushes, got a detail wrong. The plane was bound for London Gatwick, not Birmingham. First alerts are drafts.

At 23:00 UTC, The Jerusalem Post — the app that would go on to push this war harder than any other — sent its last quiet notification: the prime minister’s son was having a politician-free wedding. Seventy-seven minutes later, the war began.

“Israel attacked Iran”
00:17 UTC
The first push came at 00:17 UTC — 03:47 in Tehran, where the explosions were already audible — from g1 in Brazil, crediting “a website.” The New York Times landed the same minute. No single wire rang first; the story broke as a shrug of near-simultaneous alerts on three continents.

In the next fourteen minutes the story assembled itself one push at a time: AP heard explosions, RT cited “media,” the BBC already “expected retaliation,” and by 00:27 Jpost had the official framing — a “preemptive strike on Iranian nuclear sites.” Israel called it Operation Rising Lion.

The grind
Then the war settled into a rhythm, and the lock screen learned to carry it. For a full week, roughly one in five of everything the world’s news apps pushed — sport, politics, weather, all of it — was this war.

The United States entered the war as a push notification. Trump posted at 23:50 UTC that America had “completed a very successful attack” on three nuclear sites. Six minutes later it was on lock screens in Australia and Brazil; AP and Der Spiegel (“US entry into war”) followed within nine.

The strangest day
09:37 UTC
Day eleven made no sense on a lock screen. In the morning, Israel struck Evin — Tehran’s notorious political prison. It would prove the deadliest single strike of the war: about eighty dead, by Iran’s own count.

22:08 UTC
And then, five hours later, the war ended the way it had escalated: as a post. Trump announced a “complete and total ceasefire” at 22:02 UTC. Norway’s Dagbladet had it on lock screens at 22:06 — four minutes from Truth Social to a phone in Oslo. O Globo’s push gave the war the name that stuck: the 12-day war.

The ceasefire arrived like the war did: contradicting itself in real time. At 03:24, with hours left on the clock, an Iranian missile killed three people in Beersheba — a fourth died later.

June 25 and after
The phone moves on
23:00 UTC
And then it was over, the way things end on a phone: not with a final push, but with fewer of them. On June 25 the war was down to 9% of the lock screen and falling. The durable notification from The Hague was NATO’s secretary-general calling Trump “daddy.” The phones moved on. The dataset kept recording.
The war, in numbers nobody pushed
A lock screen is a strange place to watch a war: it renders everything the same size, a hospital and a hashtag alike. So, for the record, behind these 3,629 notifications: Iran’s official count of its dead reached at least 935 people — rights groups put it closer to 1,190 — among them about 80 killed in the strike on Evin prison and at least 14 nuclear scientists. 28 people were killed in Israel. The nuclear programme both sides went to war over was set back by months on the earliest intelligence assessments — by years on later ones.

How this was made. AO.news collects the push notifications of hundreds of news apps as they are delivered, and translates each one. This piece counts notifications from June 12 20:00 to June 25 23:59 UTC matching war keywords (Iran, Tehran, Khamenei, Natanz, Fordow, Isfahan, Israel, IDF, Hormuz, Al Udeid, ceasefire and variants) across the 96 news apps active that fortnight; headline robots are excluded, so 3,629 is a conservative floor. Notification texts are shown as pushed, machine-translated to English; times are UTC. Two app country labels were corrected by hand (Ekstra Bladet → DK, Realitatea → RO). Casualty figures follow Iranian official and HRANA counts and Israeli government figures as of July 2025.
